Implementation Science for Public Health Training
Program Description
Select staff and faculty from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the UCSF Implementation Science Training Program and the PRISE Center collaborated on the design, development, and implementation of three training activities to build implementation science capacity among CDPH staff.
Training activities include the following:
Implementation Science Mini-Course: A 14-module asynchronous online course open to all CDPH staff through the UCSF online Collaborative Learning Environment (CLE). The mini-course covers implementation science methods and their application in public health research and practice settings.
Mini-Course Modules:
Module 1: Intro to Implementation Science
Module 2: Knowledge Translation
Module 3: Equity in Implementation Science
Module 4: Theories, Models, and Frameworks: A Primer
Module 5: Process Models
Module 6: Determinant Frameworks and Implementation Theories
Module 7: Evaluation Methods
Module 8: Qualitative Data and Mixed Methods
Module 9: Real World Study Design
Module 10: Behavior Change Wheel
Module 11: Intervention Planning
Module 12: Community Engagement and Human-Centered Design
Module 13: Translating Evidence to Policy
Module 14: Community Level Change
Implementation Science Workshops: Live, interactive sessions focused on implementation science methods that CDPH staff could immediately apply to their own projects. The workshops covered the following topics:
- Quasi-Experimental Evaluation Methods
- Rapid Qualitative Methods
- Intervention Adaptation
- Rapid Cycle Research
Champion Courses: A select cohort of CDPH staff completed three courses in the UCSF Online Implementation Science Certificate Program. These “Champions” were equipped with the knowledge to use implementation science methods to identify, adapt, implement, and evaluate evidence-based interventions in public health practice settings.
Training Partner: Implementation Science Training Program
The UCSF Implementation Science Training Program is part of the Education and Training Division within the UCSF Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. The part-time program offers a variety of online courses on implementation science methods and is designed for working practitioners, researchers, and graduate students.
Learners gain knowledge on how to identify appropriate interventions to translate into practice, design effective and sustainable implementation strategies, design comprehensive evaluations of intervention implementation strategies, and develop fundable implementation science grant proposals. The Implementation Science Training Program offers the following:
- The Online Certificate Program in Implementation Science
- Implementation Science Short Course
- Implementation Science Mini-Course
- Masters Degree in Clinical Research – Implementation Science Track
